Sent to a friend I am a 35-year-old man living in northern VA. I graduated from high school and a 2-year college degree. I am able to function because I have such a great memory but I cannot sound out any new words if I have not heard someone else read the word or use it I have a hard time. However, I cannot read on an acceptable level I see my nephews who are 6 and 8 years old reading and understand English at a higher level then I am able to. In addition, I am employed and make over 75,000 a year but if I want to advance, I need to find a way to take care of this. What should I do?Rating:4.33

- Hey,
In my opinion,I think you should first humble yourself and seek help. Go to a local elementary school and consult with a teacher. I am a tutor
and I've seen that the children today break the words down letter by letter. For example, during training, they told us to remember the five vowels a,e,i,o,and u. This how they taught us that these vowels generally make these following sounds:
A-apple-makes the (ah sound)
e-elephant-makes the (eh sound)
i-igloo-makes the (ih sound)
o-octupus-makes the (oh sound)
u-umbrella-makes the(uh sound)
You can also buy a dictionary,if you don't already have one and Look at the guide to pronunciation.. I truly hopes this benefits you.Peace n luv - Hello,
You are very fortunate to have such a great memory! If you have a literary council group that helps individuals learn to speak english this will be a great opportunity for you to join in and not feel out of place. Don't be afraid nor ashamed, go ahead and learn to read. You are one of many so don't feel as if you stand alone.
Go for it, you going to be all right! - Well you have already taken the first step and admitting thy command of the english language isn't up to par. I say seek out someone who can privately help u when it comes to reading.
- MAN YOU ARE GIFTED. IT LIKE A SEAMTRESS THAT KNOWS HOW TO SEW,BUT CAN'T USE A PATTERN. YOU JUST HAVE TO GET SOME HELP. THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES TO GO TO. CHECK WITH YOU LOCAL LITERACY COUNCIL. IF YOU WORRIED ABOUT SOMEONE FINDING OUT, JUST TELL THEN YOU ARE GIVING SOME TIME BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. YOU ARE SMART, YOU WILL FIGURE THIS OUT. I SURE THAT YOU WILL BE READING IN NO TIME. GOD BLESS YOU.
- Get a tutor or have a family member help you out or do it your self by books and just start reading but start at your level then go higher and hogher4 on the levels.
- go to your local library, they should have a program or class for this...
- Hi,
Your story is amazing. never met someone who made it as far as you have with this problem. As everyone else have said find a program where you can learn but don't expect fast results it takes tme and you have to be determined and willing. - That's really brave to come out and say. Literacy councils will have good resources, and your memory will be a big help.
Learning new words is a matter of practise and expose. Copy down every word you see that you don't know, and look up the definition when you get a chance. Watch the news or free podcasts to hear them used and pronounced.
Read with your nephews - make it enjoyable and you will do it more. When things aren't fun is when we quit or slack off (like me and the gym!) - how are u typing ur story and reading replies? hello captian obvious??
- i agree with the last person. obviously you CAN read if you can type a post. and i think graduating college illiterate is also horse shit. i have a four year degree and there is A LOT of reading and writing papers invlolved. unless you paid someone to do your homework. then how did you take notes in class, or even study. FALSE
- There are people out there who want to help YOU. Find them and take advantage. You CAN do it.
- It would be a good time to visit your community college or speak to a friend. Your note is too short to make a good analysis but if you already possess that great a level in terms of memory and adaptability; it's only a question of how far you can push beyond.
See help from an educational professional or those in other levels (out of your company) who can recommend the ideal training.
